FITC-Q-dextran

FITC-Q-dextran

FITC-Q-dextran is a positively charged polysaccharide labelled with FITC. Unlike DEAE-dextrans, Q-dextrans will be charged over a wide range of pH (pH 4-10). These products will have a much stronger net charge than the corresponding DEAE-dextrans and thus will give enhanced responses in systems where this effect is important. All the batches are checked for molecular weight, degree of substitution, loss on drying and free FITC. TdB Labs produces FITC-Q-dextran at a molecular weight of 10 kDa that is supplied as a yellow powder.

Structure
Dextran is a branched polysaccharide elaborated by the bacteria Leuconostoc mesenteroides B512F. Unlike the cationic Diethylaminoethyl (DEAE)-dextran, Q-dextran carries only quaternary amine groups. The nitrogen content is approximately 2% (by elemental analysis) which corresponds to approximately one quaternary ammonium group for every four glucose units.

Spectral data
FITC-Q-dextran has an excitation maximum of 490 – 495 nm and an emission maximum of 520 ± 5 nm.

Storage and stability
FITC-Q-dextran is stable for more than 6 years when stored dry in well-sealed containers at ambient temperature.

Solubility
FITC-Q-dextran dissolves readily in water.

Application
FITC-Q-dextran is mainly used for studying permeability and microcirculation. The Q-groups will impart an overall positive charge to the molecule, which may be valuable in gaining information on the permeability characteristics of cell membranes and tissues. FITC-Q-dextran has a much stronger net charge than the corresponding DEAE-dextran. Read more about applications here.
